Our Commitment to Sustainability:
At The One That Got Away, we are proud to declare our commitment to ensuring a sustainable supply of seafood for future generations so we support and encourage responsible fishing practices and environmentally responsible farming.
Our suppliers at the Sydney Fish Markets back our claims:
‘Our market is the lifeblood for fishers in more than 300 regional communities across Australia who sell through our wholesale auction and direct sales services, as well as for the many small businesses, retailers and restaurants which rely upon us for supply. We actively support them with initiatives which inject value back into their communities, through our mechanisms of sale and activity, and by developing best practice seafood handling and quality systems to ensure they maximise their returns from their catch or seafood purchases. This broader SFM community includes our tenants, who operate onsite wholesale and retail seafood operations, and provide vital industry-specific services, and our staff, who bring the Auction, the site, and our broader industry activities, to life every day. Together, their efforts create the unique, vibrant atmosphere SFM is renowned for and contribute significantly to the industry as a whole.
We are proud to work with The One That Got Away as they share our commitment to the development of ecologically sustainable fisheries and a viable future for the Australian seafood industry.
We are dedicated to continuous improvement in the prevention of pollution and the environmental sustainability of all our activities and we work with industry bodies, governments, business partners and others to progress best practice environmental management and sustainable practice across the entire seafood industry, at every stage of seafood production. Our certification to ISO 14001 – Environmental Management System, ISO 14064 – Greenhouse Gas Verification System and AS/NZS 4801 – Safety Management System are key examples of our commitment to continual improvement and willingness to submit our processes to independent external review.
We support innovation by our fishers, tenants and small business customers to ensure the longevity of seafood supply and of their businesses, so Australians can continue to enjoy fresh seafood for generations to come.’
We are also proud to make mention of our primary supplier and partner, Huon Aquaculture who make their sustainability practices and measures completely transparent to the public as reported by Independent auditor Paul Macintyre from Food Certification International:
‘I was impressed in particular by the professionally produced Veterinary Health Plan and the expertly managed harvest operations are an indication that Huon Aquaculture give fish health and welfare top priority’
Their Philosophy is Stress Free, Well Nourished, Kept Clean and Healthy, In line with Sustainability Practices. Huon are the first Salmon Producer to be accredited with a Global G.A.P. as well as maintaining their ‘A’ rating by the British Retail Consortium (BRC) Global Standard for Food Safety for the 3rd Year in a row.
Sustainability reporting goes hi-tech at Huon Aquaculture on Jan, 2014 when our supplier unveiled what is believed to be a first for the industry worldwide in sharing current sustainability information with the wider community.
